Play On! is closing its doors
After much careful, and often painful, consideration and discussion, the staff of Play On has made the difficult decision to close down the theater permanently as of September 19, 2014. Sadly, it has become clear that Play On lacks both the funding and the volunteer base to keep going. The staff has considered a number of approaches short of shutting down, but none of them is fiscally realistic, and we are simply out of options. When Play On lost its home at the Ix Building in 2013, after seven seasons, we were determined to find a way to relocate and continue, and we are all glad that we were able to move into our current studio space in Belmont, thereby launching a new, leaner Play On. Everybody associated with Play On remains deeply grateful to those who contributed to our Emergency Relocation Fund. Because of that support, we produced three shows in our new location, all of them very well-received by audiences, and we were delighted to be able to take live theater on the road to a number of exciting venues like Albemarle Ciderworks, White Hall Vineyards and Kilaurwen Winery. Unfortunately, we have been unable to bring in sufficient revenue to continue. We are all very grateful for the support we have received from the community over the last eight years, and are proud of the fifty-four productions we have mounted since we opened with A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, in September of 2006. Over four-hundred volunteers have worked on Play On shows, and many thousands have sat in the audience. Nearly two-hundred families, individuals and local businesses have supported Play On through memberships and other donations. None of what Play On has accomplished over the last eight years would have been possible without your help and participation. We are very sorry to be saying goodbye, but we thank you again for your support, and look forward to seeing you again soon.
